Tuesday Rock Roundup

This year promises to be a busy one in the classic rock world. A wide array of acts will be on the road, including Eric Clapton, Elton John (who turns 60 in March), The Moody Blues, Allman Brothers Band and, in the fall, Paul McCartney. He is also scheduled to release a new album. The Genesis reunion tour will hit North America in the fall, and everyone is waiting to see if David Lee Roth and Van Halen will reunite one more time. V-H has also been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the class of 2007 will be announced on January 8th.

Tom Petty says that reports of him retiring from music and the road were overblown last year. He tells the L-A Times, "Sometimes people get things wrong or misunderstand." But he adds that all the extra attention he got from a Rolling Stone interview last summer definitely added a little something to the Heartbreakers' 30th anniversary. "I really couldn't have imagined a year like this happening. I didn't see this coming, especially with the way things were just a few years ago." With a feature documentary due on the band this year, Petty says, "You never know how things are going to turn out, and I didn't see [last] year coming, like I said. But maybe [this] year will be even better."

The Eagles have filed suit against a South Korean insurance company that's been using "Desperado" in commercials without permission. Lawyers for Don Henley and Glenn Frey are asking the Korea Life Insurance Company to stop using the tune immediately -- and then fork over a half-million dollars in damages. An official for the company blamed its ad agency, saying, "As far as we know the deal was closed successfully. There might have been a misunderstanding, so we are looking into the matter right now."

Rod Stewart has been made a Commander of the British Empire (C-B-E) by the Queen of England. While that leaves him an aristocratic notch below Sirs Paul McCartney, Elton John, Tom Jones and Cliff Richard, it does put him in the same honorary league as Roger Daltrey, Eric Clapton, Ray Davies, Peter Sellers, Barry Gibb, Petula Clark and Roger Moore. The official ceremony will take place in March.

Will 2007 be the year that four surviving Faces -- Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones -- reunite? Wood tells Uncut magazine that he thought they were all for the idea until "I got a call from Mac saying, 'Rod's doing it just for his own benefit. Let's not do it.'" Wood also has some criticism for the singer. "With all the years he's been stranded away from the group thing, he's Hollywood-ified... He's lost the earthiness I know he still has inside him." Stewart, who kicks off an arena tour later this month, has always said he would reunite The Faces for a one-off show or charity event. Woody's latest release, The Essential Crossexion, includes a previously unreleased collaboration with Stewart called "You Strum and I'll Sing."

Classic rock theme cruises are really catching on. Sammy Hagar did his first last year, performing for fans on a ship docked in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. This time., a boat will sail from Southern California to Cabo March 11th through the 18th. Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gimmie Three Days cruise, which also features 38 Special, leaves Miami on Friday. And Melissa Etheridge will provide the entertainment on a weeklong Caribbean Escape cruise being promoted by travel company that serves the lesbian community. The singer-guitarist will perform on the first and last nights of the cruise, which sails out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 25th and returns on April 1st.

Chicago will celebrate its 40th anniversary as a band in 2007. Sax player Walt Parazaider told us recently of a compliment they received from H-B-O sports announcer Larry Merchant, who compared them to one of baseball's most revered figures. (audio)
