Tuesday Rock Roundup

It's all over the Canadian papers: The Police are secretly rehearsing in Vancouver for a major, as-yet-unannounced appearance on the 2007 Grammy Awards. It's true, although there is no official word. But when CBS' live signal goes to the Staples Center on Feb. 11, director Ken Ehrlich will have scored a coup: The Police will appear and sing most likely one of three songs: "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle" or "Roxanne." And — surprise of surprises — this should guarantee an announcement forthcoming of a huge North American tour, followed by dates in Europe, all beginning in late spring. But the group will not, I repeat will not, appear at either the Coachella or Glastonbury festivals. There have been rumors to that effect, but all credible sources say they are untrue.

At his show in Las Vegas on Friday, Don Henley told the audience that the new Eagles album should be done in "60 to 90 days" and promised that he'd see them this summer. Bassist Timothy B. Schmit writes on his website, "We are making steady progress, and I now believe there actually will be an album. Exactly when, I couldn't say, but we are working diligently to make this happen as soon as possible." The Eagles' last studio album was The Long Run in 1979.

Peter Frampton is back in stores today with an updated version of his 1995 album, Frampton Comes Alive Two. The two C-D set, recorded at the Fillmore in San Francisco to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his landmark Frampton Comes Alive album, contains 40 minutes of unreleased music. The show is also now available for the first time on D-V-D (it was released on video in 1995). Frampton will be back on the road in April, May and June, with plans to do a co-headlining tour with the Doobie Brothers this summer.

There are rumors that Elton John is looking to purchase a 25-million-dollar penthouse in Los Angeles. If he does, his neighbors will be Cher, Matthew Perry and Lindsay Lohan. Elton has homes in Atlanta, England, Italy and France.

Bad Company and former Free drummer Simon Kirke will open two shows for Freeway, a Free cover band, next month in England. Kirke will also tour the U-K in April and May.
