Queen guitarist Brian May is under 24-hour security watch after a schizophrenic man threatened his life. The 28-year old unidentified man left behind a note saying that he was the real Brian May, that the Queen guitarist was an "impostor" and that he was going to London to kill the guitarist. Police tell the Sunday Mirror that the suspect, who takes medication for his schizophrenia but does not have his drugs with him, was last seen on May 2nd and was reported missing by his father.
The Who's Roger Daltrey was in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday where he opened a million-dollar treatment unit that provides care for young cancer patients at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Center. It is the first such unit opened by Daltrey's pet charity, the Teenage Cancer Trust, in Scotland. Daltrey, a patron of the charity, tells us, "We build hospital wards for teenagers. They were unrecognized as a group of people with special needs. And we found that by putting teenagers together, who are suffering from cancer, we are getting up to a 15- to 20-percent success rate of their treatment." Daltrey has held numerous charitable events for the T-C-T over the years, including an annual week-long run of shows at the London's Royal Albert Hall in March.
Details have been announced for the seventh annual Joey Ramone Birthday Bash, which will celebrate what would have been the late punk icon's 56th birthday. The event, which will be held Saturday at New York's Irving Plaza, will feature performances by the New York Dolls and other punk acts. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Joey Ramone Foundation for Lymphoma Research.
In addition to getting ready for a summer tour, Ted Nugent is also in pre-production for a new album. A video of him jamming at his Waco, Texas home with his band -- drummer Tommy Clufetos and bass player Barry Sparks -- is posted on his website. No word on when he will start recording the album or when it will be released. Nugent starts his summer tour June 1st in Fort Worth, Texas with dates through September 3rd in Pueblo, Colorado.
NEW ON CD & DVD TODAY:
The first installment in the Genesis career retrospective will finally be released today after being pushed back from its original release date last month. Genesis: 1976-to-1981 contains extra tracks, unreleased concert footage, interviews, videos, photo galleries and reproductions of tour programs. Keyboardist Tony Banks oversaw the remixes and he tells us they don't sound "instantly very different to any of the originals at all. They just sound a lot better." The six-C-D/six-D-V-D collection covers the period following the departures of Peter Gabriel and later guitarist Steve Hackett. Rhino promises two more sets that will cover 13 albums generated by the band.
Jefferson Airplane is captured at the peak of their fame in a live C-D that's in stores today from Sony/Legacy. Sweeping Up -- Jefferson Airplane Live at the Fillmore East 1969 is taken from a pair of shows at the famed New York concert venue -- only two cuts from those shows were previously released. Leading off with the group's "Volunteers," the 10-track, hour-long show also includes such Airplane staples as "White Rabbit," "Crown of Creation" and "Good Shepherd."
