Tuesday Rock Roundup

Nearly three decades after they first traveled around America in a Ford Econoline van, The Police kicked off their reunion tour at G-M Place in Vancouver, Canada last night. Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland took the stage to the tune of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up." Copeland struck an enormous gong to begin a sprawling two-hour show of the group's hits that made it clear the band has returned in excellent form. Sting says that time has been pretty kind to the trio: (audio)

Sting's son, 31-year-old bassist and singer Joe Sumner, showed that he's picked up a thing or two from his dad as his band, Fiction Plane, kicked off the evening with a high-energy set of melodic rock. Especially when his voice climbed into the upper register, he sounded just like his father did when he was the same age.

Elton John's partner David Furnish says the singer is easing up on his infamous Jekyll and Hyde personality. Furnish tells Closer magazine Elton has "been in an absolute bubble, floating happily along ever since [his 60th birthday in March]... I think turning 60 has been a milestone for him. There's a complete change in attitude, in a completely positive direction, which I'm really happy about."

The Dr. Martens shoe company has gotten grief for using images of late Clash singer Joe Strummer, Kurt Cobain, Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols in advertisements in the U-K. Mickey Leigh, Joey Ramone's brother, says, "We were never asked for permission to use Joey's image, or paid for the use of it. As executor of my brother's estate, I never would have approved this ad as Joey never wore these shoes. And, not that my brother was terribly religious, but the fact that he was Jewish, and this ad is not exactly Kosher, makes it that much more inappropriate, inconsiderate and contemptible." The ads depicted the dead rock stars wearing the company's shoes in heaven. Courtney Love, Kurt Cobain's widow also protested, and she received an apology from David Suddens, the president of Dr. Martens. He tells People-dot-com, "We do think that it is offensive. We made a mistake. My message to Courtney Love is this is something we shouldn't have been doing."

A story out of New Zealand says Mick Jagger tried to enlarge his penis by letting bees sting it. He reportedly covered what his former girlfriend, model Janice Dickinson, referred to as a "small penis" with bees in the hope that their stings would cause it to swell. Film director Julien Temple, who directed the Stones video for "Undercover of the Night," tells New Zealand's Radio Four, "It involved putting bamboo over the male member and filling it with stinger bees so the member attained the size of the bamboo. Mick spent months in the jungle in Peru. He was going mad out there I think." A spokeswoman for Jagger was unavailable for comment.

Mark Knopfler has re-recorded the 1985 Dire Straits song "Brothers in Arms." He recently did it in one take at Abbey Road Studios, and the money raised from the sale of the single will go to the South Atlantic Medal Association to assist in its program of treatments for Falklands War veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Knopfler says, "I'm touched that my song 'Brothers in Arms,' which I wrote at the time of the Falklands War, has been chosen to support the many veterans who are still suffering from the effects of that conflict." To mark the 25th anniversary of the British victory at Goose Green, the new version of "Brothers in Arms" has been released as a digital download (click the words Tuesday Rock Roundup above to learn more). It is also available on C-D at Falklands-25-dot-com and Sama-82-dot-org-dot-uk. The Brothers in Arms album was recently named the second best album of all-time in a poll conducted by the B-B-C. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U-S-A was number-one.

In other reissue news: The 40th anniversary reissue of The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset" has debuted at number-one on the U-K indie chart.

Ray Manzarek of The Doors will be among the artists taking part in the Summer of Love 40th Anniversary festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park on September 2nd. The free concert will also feature performances by New Riders of the Purple Sage, Canned Heat, Country Joe McDonald, The Charlatans, Dan Hicks and many others. Additional acts will be announced soon.

Like Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, Sammy Hagar and Cabo Wabo are more than a restaurant and tequila -- it's also a lifestyle. And now Hagar is trying to bring that lifestyle to radio stations with a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week Cabo Wabo format. The mission statement is to "create the most exciting radio station in the world based on the slogans -- The Party That Doesn't Sleep." The format promises "classic Sammy Hagar brand of feel-good rock; timeless rock classics with party energy; the hottest, cutting-edge new rock; party till you drop country rock music; and modern rock from around the world." Hagar and his partners hope to launch the format on July 5th.

Foo Fighters have pushed back the re-release of their second album, The Colour and the Shape. The expanded version -- which features covers and B-sides -- is now due out July 10th. I mention this because it's an incredibly underrated rock album everyone should own.

Ozzfest has been dubbed "Freefest" this year, as the annual hard rock traveling festival is having sponsors pay for all the tickets and giving them away to fans. Ozzy Osbourne is once again the headliner.

Live Earth is somewhat of a sequel to 2005's Live 8 concerts. But this time around the shows are to promote efforts to stop climate change. The show at Giants Stadium in New Jersey features The Police and Roger Waters, while Genesis heads up the London bill.

Lollapalooza at Chicago's Grant Park expands to a third day this year, with Pearl Jam as the closing night headliner on August 5th.
