Tuesday Rock Roundup

2007 is not only a big year for R-E-M because of their upcoming induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- it's also big because the band plans to record their first album in more than three years.

Robert Plant's idea to reform his mid-80s R-and-B cover band The Honeydrippers wasn't originally inspired by a couple of benefits gigs. Plant decided to restart the band after talking last year with late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Plant and Ertegun started discussing what material could be on a second Honeydrippers E-P, and Plant planned on hitting the studio this spring to record. Since Ertegun died last month, Plant has abandoned the idea of making any studio recordings., but he and the Honeydrippers will play at a Valentine's Day charity gig in Dudley, England, to raise money to pay for brain cancer treatments for his neighbor Jackie Jennings.

Rock Star Supernova will kickoff their very first tour tonight in Hollywood, Florida. The six-week trek with Panic Channel will hit some pretty large venues -- larger than Supernova guitarist Gilby Clarke expected. The venues include New York's Radio City Music Hall and the Wachovia Spectrum in Philadelphia. Clarke admits, "Some of them are very big. Some of them are very wishful thinking."

Heaven and Hell -- the name the Ronnie James Dio-era version of Black Sabbath will tour under this year -- have started their own MySpace page.

As we begin another season of American Idol tonight, judge Randy Jackson gives us his all-time pick. "Kelly Clarkson's done the best hands down. I mean her last record sold 10-million copies. What that says to me is that she hit her public square on the bull's-eye, so people believed her. They loved the songs. She had great songs. I think that song 'Breakaway' is a career record. I think 'Breakaway' is the best song ever recorded by any 'Idol' to date on any record." The second best woman ever to appear on American Idol? We have to go with Clay Aiken.
