Tuesday Rock Roundup

Ringo Starr is back in stores today with Liverpool 8, his first studio album for Capitol since Goodnight Vienna in 1974. Ringo co-wrote and recorded 12 songs for the disc, and the title track tells an encapsulated version of Ringo's biography.

15 unreleased songs The Beatles recorded at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany in 1962 will soon be made available online one song at a time by Fuego Entertainment. The original tape of this live recording -- made just before the Fab Four signed with E-M-I -- was "lost" for 33 years in the record and tape collection of music producer and promoter Jeffrey Collins. Among the songs are "A Taste of Honey," "Hippy Hippy Shake," "Money," "Twist and Shout," and "I Saw Her Standing There." There are also eight songs not available on any previously released album or single, including Paul McCartney singing Hank Williams' "Lovesick Blues," George Harrison doing Maurice Williams' "Do You Believe," and McCartney and John Lennon duetting on "Ask Me Why." A spokesman for the Beatles corporation, Apple, was unavailable for comment.

The Eagles will follow up the huge success of their first studio album in 28 years, Long Road Out of Eden, with a world tour that will start in London with four shows at the O-2 Arena on March 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 26th. These shows will debut an all-new stage production, but no word on when the tour will hit North America.

Former Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman says he needs to work. He tells Britain's Telegraph newspaper that when he left the Stones in 1992, the "big money wasn't there yet. I had a small nest egg and I can live nicely but I can't rely on Stones royalties to support me. I have to work and I'm not in the same league as the boys who stayed on." In addition to his band, the Rhythm Kings, Wyman also owns the Sticky Fingers restaurant in London and has written numerous books. He starts a U-K tour with the Rhythm Kings on January 24th.

Gene Simmons was the keynote speaker last week at the Small Business Hawaii Business and Investment Conference in Honolulu. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann presented Simmons with a proclamation declaring January 9th "Gene Simmons Day" in Honolulu. Also, according to his website, Simmons has filed to protect the trademark Gene Simmons Wet in relation to "bottled spring water, bottled drinking water and bottled flavored water drinks."

And...God help us all...American Idol kicks off its seventh season tonight with those auditions we love to hate. Judge Paula Abdul tells us about the most-sung, and most-feared, tunes she heard on the audition trail. "It's not that we don't like the songs -- it's just that we don't want to hear them anymore. It's a toss up between Etta James's 'At Last' and R. Kelly's 'I Believe I Can Fly.' Or this season we heard so many of, believe it or not, Gnarles Barkley's 'Crazy.'However, they were some of the best auditions, because, believe it or not, the liberty that some of the creative contestants took with that song will surprise you."
