D'oh!

SPRINGFIELD, Minn. -- For years, fans of "The Simpsons" have looked for clues to the exact location of the fictional television family's hometown of Springfield.

They can cross Springfield, Minn., off the list.

Sixteen U.S. cities named Springfield have agreed to take part in a nationwide contest sponsored by "The Simpsons Movie" to be named as the yellow-skinned cartoon family's hometown. The winner gets a free preview screening of the movie that comes out in July.

But when contest organizers contacted the southwestern Minnesota town of Springfield and asked it to participate, no one was very excited.

City Manager Mac Tilberg said that it might not be such an honor to be identified as the fictional Springfield.

Tilberg said that Springfield, Minn., is a "clean, close-knit community" with "no pollution, no waste dumps, nobody misbehaving all the time."
The Minnesota Springfield is a town of 2,200 people and is about 90 miles southwest of Minneapolis.
