Wassup 2008: Hilarious

Steal A McCain Sign...Get Shot

I love that this guy didn't call the authorities...but had time to get his rifle, aim, and fire at the van. And honestly: who fires warning shots directly at the vehicle??? Not guilty my ass...

Man Charged With Wounding Teen Caught Stealing His McCain Sign

LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio -- A teenager was wounded in the arm by a man who said he wanted to stop the boy and another from taking his John McCain yard sign.

Warren Township police Lt. Don Bishop said 50-year-old Kenneth Rowles told officers he got out a .22-caliber rifle Saturday afternoon to fire warning shots, not hurt anyone. The two shots hit the van the teens were in.

Rowles pleaded not guilty Monday to felonious assault. A preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 4, Election Day.

Kyree Flowers, the 17-year-old passenger in the van, was wounded in the arm and was treated at a hospital, Bishop said.

The victim and his cousin admitted stealing signs at the Rowles home and elsewhere, Bishop said Tuesday. Rowles had the only McCain sign on a street with numerous Barack Obama signs, according to Bishop.

He said there was no evidence the thefts were anything more than teen vandalism. No charges were filed against the boys.

Local Republican and Democratic officials said campaign signs have been disappearing frequently and people were frustrated.

Rock Band: Beatles?

Are The Beatles coming to the popular video game Rock Band? Apple Corps and MTV have scheduled a press teleconference this morning at 10:00 ET to announce "an exclusive agreement to develop a global music project." Among the acts who have taken advantage of this latest way to promote and distribute music is AC/DC, who, like the Beatles, have refused to make their music available for digital download. Ironically, the bands are the numbers-one (Beatles) and two top-selling catalog acts over the last five years. --Sal Cirrincione, Premiere

As The Zep Turns: Update

The promoter who put on the Zep reunion show last December doesn't understand why Jimmy and John Paul want to go on the road without Robert. He told the BBC "If there's no complelling reason to do it, then they shouldn't do it." John Paul Jones says that he and Jimmy Page and drummer Jason Bonham have been rehearsing with different singers. Rumored to be taking part in these auditions are Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Alter Bridge's Myles Kennedy. Jones isn't saying anything more, however, and Page hasn't been availible for comment either. The last project involving only two members of the band was the Page/Plant pairing in the mid 90s that gave us two pretty solid albums and a tour. Ironically, John Paul Jones was willing to work with them at the time, and wasn't invited, according to reports. And at least that project had the good grace to call itself something other than Led Zeppelin. In my opinion, going on the road sans Robert Plant is a horrible idea if you're using the Zep moniker.

Phil Spector And The Holy Wig Of Innocence Return To Court Today

Phil Spector's re-trial for the 2003 shooting deal of struggling actress Lana Clarkson begins today. The Los Angeles Times shed some light on the 12-person jury -- six of its members have fired weapons at a gun range or during military service, while four keep weapons in their homes. Citing information released by Los AngelesCounty, two of the panel expressed negative opinions of gun ownership. And only one of the 12 claimed to be a fan of Spector's legendary music.

Black Ice #1 in 29 Countries

AC/DC's Black Ice is the number-one album in 29 countries. It will top the Billboard Top 200 after selling close to 800-thousand copies its first week in stores, marking the band's first-ever number-one debut in the US. Over five-million copies of Black Ice have been shipped worldwide, combined with close to five-million in catalog sales so far this year. Asked how he thinks Black Ice stands up against their earlier albums, guitarist Angus Young tells us, "I think it's good. It stands up because there's a lot of strong songs on it. I mean that's what a band really is -- you're as good as the songs." Black Ice, available exclusively at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and AC/DC-dot-com, is also number-one in Canada, the UK, their native Australia, Germany, France, Argentina, Japan, Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and 13 other countries. AC/DC kicked off their Black Ice tour last night in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and show number-two is tomorrow night in Chicago.

Tuesday Rock Roundup

John Paul Jones confirms that he, Jimmy Page and Jason Bonham are looking for a singer to replace Robert Plant for a tour. Over the weekend at an English Guitar show, Jones said, "As soon as we know who it is, we'll let you know who it is." The names that have been floated include Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He sang with Zeppelin when he inducted them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Spokesmen for Zeppelin and Tyler were unavailable for comment. Jones also said that they would work again with Plant in "a couple of years." He added that their reunion show last December at the O2 Arena in London may be headed to DVD.

Britain's News of the World is reporting that The Rolling Stones will perform at the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in London in 2012. A source tells the paper, "Mick Jagger feels the Olympics coming to London is a huge honor and wants to make his own gesture with the band. It's early stages, but Jimmy Page, David Bowie and Van Morrison are already involved, although no one is quite sure yet how the show will play out in its entirety." There's also talk that Elton John, Phil Collins, Sting and David Gilmour will be part of the festivities. Page performed at the closing ceremony in Beijing this summer.

Looking for a Christmas gift for the Beatles fan in your life? Bloomingdale's is selling the limited edition Beatles iPod. But before you shell out the 795 dollars, you should know you'll have to load the music onto the device yourself. The 120-gig iPod is black and is etched with the Beatles' logo on the front and Abbey Road on the back. It comes with the 13 original Beatles CDs, the two Past Masters collections, the Love CD and an engraved guitar pick. Only 25-hundred will be sold. Also available is the Beatles Monopoly set. The properties on the board represent Beatles albums and points of interest, and the pewter game pieces are based on their songs: Walrus ("I Am the Walrus"), Sun ("Here Comes the Sun"), Raccoon ("Rocky Raccoon"), Octopus ("Octopus's Garden"), Strawberry ("Strawberry Fields Forever") and Hammer ("Maxwell's Silver Hammer").

Slash doesn't know which will come out first in 2009 -- a new Velvet Revolver album or his first solo album. Either way, the guitarist plans to be very busy. He tells Billboard he's done demoing songs for his solo disc and hopes to start recording early next year...but that plan could get pushed back if Velvet Revolver find a new singer soon. Slash won't be singing on his album...he plans to recruit a different singer for each song. But he's not revealing any names yet.

The Grateful Dead Family is mourning yet another keyboard player. Bob Weir has issued a statement regarding last week's death of keyboard player Merl Saunders, who was never a member of the Grateful Dead but did extensive work with the Jerry Garcia Band back in the day. Weir called him "the sun rising over the keyboards every time I looked over at him.".

Alice Cooper will host The Monstrous Munster Mash, an eight-hour Halloween marathon of Munsters episodes, on the WGN America cable network Friday night. Cooper says, "I grew up on The Munsters. 'Herman' taught me everything I know, and 'Grandpa' taught me all the other things I wasn't supposed to know. I remember meeting Herman (actor Fred Gwynne) at one of those Hollywood parties back in the day and he said, 'Alice, I am your father.'"

Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman threw himself a 72nd birthday party last week at his London home. Among the guests were Jerry Hall and Ronnie Wood's estranged wife Jo Wood -- both of whom gave Wyman plants...

Tuesday Rock Roundup

Sting says that The Police now have "closure" after wrapping up their reunion tour in August. He tells The Sunday-Mail in Australia, "It was a great farewell. I don't think we overdid it. My instinct that it would be timely was correct... I think we got to achieve what the Americans call closure because the Police never really finished -- we just did other things. I think we have done it now." Up next for Sting is a limited engagement in an opera with his friend Elvis Costello.

As a part of their deal with concert promoter Live Nation, U-2 are about to get 19-million dollars worth of company stock. In exchange for equity in the firm, U-2 allows Live Nation to handle their touring, merchandising and website. Last week, the company registered a little more than one-point-five-million shares of stock in a regulatory filing, which triggered the windfall for Bono and company. U-2's last tour, the 2005-2007 Vertigo outing, grossed close to 400-million dollars.

Ozzfest will make a return for a 14th year next summer, according to Sharon Osbourne. But how, is still uncertain. 2007's tour was free, and 2008's was a one-day event. But one thing is for sure, tickets to the 2009 edition will have a price tag. Sharon told MTV that with the struggling economy, there's no way they'll put the show on for free.

Jimmy Page has said thanks, but no thanks to a California man who started a petition to honor Led Zeppelin with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Page's spokesman has sent a letter to Rocky Dickerson saying, "Jimmy has asked me to thank you for this interest, but he does not feel that this is something he can endorse." Dickerson says he will keep the petition going and will continue trying to get the band's approval.

Rush plan to release a third in their series of Retrospective albums, this one focusing on their recordings for Atlantic Records. Retrospective Three will be a CD/DVD set with 27 songs spread over the two discs. Among the tracks are "One Little Victory," "Roll the Bones," "Ghost of a Chance" (live), "Show Don't Tell," "The Seeker" and "Driven." According to Amazon, it will be out January 27th. Rush will release a DVD documenting their 2007-2008 Snakes and Arrows tour on November 25th.

The Who start a nine-city, 10-show North American tour tonight in Detroit.

A two-disc 25th anniversary deluxe edition of REM's Murmur will hit stores on November 25th, the debut album will be repackaged with a previously unreleased concert recorded at Larry's Hideaway in Toronto in July 1983.

Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx recently had a portrait of his bandmate, guitarist Mick Mars, tattooed on his leg.

Guns n' Roses fans will be able to purchase Chinese Democracy from somewhere other than Best Buy -- the long awaited album will go on sale at I-Tunes on November 25th, two days after it hits shelves at the electronics giant. Of course, as with anything decided by frontman Axl Rose, this could all change at any time.

Big Pink, the modest house in West Saugerties, New York where The Band lived and rehearsed, is featured in the fall issue of Oprah Winfrey's O at Home magazine. It's part of a multi-issue feature about the most influential homes in history. Keyboardist Garth Hudson and the home's present owners were interviewed for the piece. The Band recorded The Basement Tapes with Bob Dylan in the basement of the house.
It looks like the makers of Doctor Pepper are going to follow through on their promise of a free can for everyone in the US if Guns n' Roses release Chinese Democracy in 2008. With a November 23rd release date set, Doctor Pepper exec Tony Jacobs tells the New York Post, "If the rumors are true, we're putting the Dr Pepper on ice." Jacobs hasn't explained how the free Doctor Pepper will be distributed if Chinese Democracy actually sees the light of day this calendar year, and though I don't drink much pop anymore...there's ALWAYS room for a Dr. Pepper...
Like the rest of their albums, AC/DC's new one, Black Ice, will not be available for download when it is released on Monday. The band has resisted offering their catalog digitally and they don't need to. Since 2003, their catalog has sold 18-million copies making them the best-selling catalog act behind The Beatles and ahead of the Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. One of the reasons AC/DC has resisted I-Tunes in particular is because guitarist Malcolm Young thinks the head of Apple, Steve Jobs, is "arrogant... I don't really like him." Black Ice will be released exclusively through Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and AC/DC dot com. Of course, if they were to make their music available for download...they'd make money hand over fist. There's a report out that says the album has been leaked and has already been downloaded more than 400-thousand times from Bit Torrent alone.
Neil Young kicks off a North American tour tonight in St. Paul, Minnesota. Unlike during last year's Chrome Dreams Two theater tour, Young will be hitting arenas and doesn't have a new album to promote.
Ringo Starr has posted a video on his website announcing that he wants his fans to stop sending him letters requesting autographs. He says, "After the 20th of October please do not send fan mail to any address that you have. Nothing will be signed after the 20th of October. If that has a date on the envelope, it's gonna be tossed. I'm warning you with peace and love I have too much to do. So no more fan mail and no objects to be signed. Nothing. Anyway, peace and love, peace and love." You can see the video at RingoStarr-dot-com.

Eddie Van Halen is getting married again. Back in August, while vacationing in Hawaii, Eddie (53) proposed to his girlfriend/publicist Janie Liszewski (38). It'll be his 2nd marriage (the first of course being to actress Valerie Bertinelli), and her first. Eddie had hoped to continue to keep it secret, but someone blabbed to People Magazine.

Independent record stores have reportedly reached a compromise that will allow them to stock AC/DC's new album, Black Ice, without impinging on the exclusive deal the band has made with WalMart. Indie-store owners had been threatening to import copies of the album from South Africa and then sell it for a price that would undercut the retail giant. Now they'll be able to sell vinyl copies of the disc and the single "Rock and Roll Train." Black Ice will be released in two weeks.

Carlos Santana says wants to retire from music in six years -- and become a minister. In an interview in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist says, "I'm going to stop playing when I'm 67 and work on what I really want to do...which is to be a minister, like Little Richard."

Denver will celebrate what would have been John Lennon's 68th birthday this Thursday by staging a special outdoor event. Named for one his most famous post-Beatles songs, The Imagine Peace Paint-In will be held in Civic Center Park with a variety of activities...including painting, concerts and guests celebrating John's life and the causes he felt dearest.

Steely Dan's Donald Fagen is urging fans to register to vote on his website. He's not telling you whom to vote for, but he's not being subtle with whom he'd like you to choose, saying, "Vote for the candidate of your choice -- either the young, crisp, energetic Barack Obama, or the old, nasty, scary, paranoid guy."

The "Starman" figure on the cover of Rush's fourth album, 1976's 2112, has been made into a limited-edition statue. Rush collaborated with the Knucklebonz company on the figure, and the company's website is now taking pre-orders for the three-thousand copies that will be released in late November. This isn't the first Rush figurine. A few years ago all the band's members were made into bobblehead dolls.

On the next Vinyl Monday: Now And Zen

In 1988, vinyl LPs were rapidly becoming archaic, and only weird people like me were still buying them...along with cassettes and CDs. Most acts no longer tried to balance two sides, embracing the CD format fully, and ignoring the old trusty vinyl.
Robert Plant, however, still respected the format that made him who he was. True, he also released a CD version of Now And Zen with a bonus track, but the LP version had great symmetry and gave us a pretty decent audio snapshot of the sound that sold units in '88.
I loved this album: it came out the year I graduated High School. So Monday, it's Side One of Now And Zen from Robert Plant (part of the soundtrack of my time pushing grease around in the kitchen of a Dairy Queen)...Monday Morning we revisit it at 9a on Vinyl Monday at http://www.waor.com.
